Relief Spotlight : Ashe County

How can we help?

Amber Scott is a partner in Cline Church Nursery, one of our largest suppliers.

“You don't think of major flooding in the mountains - how is it possible? But we understand the meaning of flash flooding now. When the water accumulates as it comes out of the mountains due to 20+ inches (in some areas we have heard of 30") of rain in 48 hours it gains extreme force and volume when it reaches downstream.

“Our entire river bottom looked like a lake including many of our buildings. We have saved our office and equipment and most of our Garden Center even though water filled the entire area. Some farmers have experienced loss of livestock, hay, landslides taking out portions of their tree fields.

“Others in our county have not fared so well. Some have lost their homes and businesses completely due to flooding or they may have even been swept off the foundation. And even loss of life. The kids were out of school for a month. Many were without power for almost 2 weeks.

Amber added: “I have been truly amazed by the people who have come here to help. People who are not from anywhere nearby, bringing supplies and then staying to volunteer their time. It has been such a gift to our whole region. I can truly see in it the hand of Jesus.”

How we can help

As winter approaches and the initial wave of support subsides, the people of the region will not only work to rebuild, many will struggle to survive. Amber suggested two charities in the area that are helping with hurricane relief, and both are offered by the Ashe Baptist Association, www.ashebaptist.org.

Ashe Really Cares / Hope 4 the Mountains

Ashe Really Cares (ARC) Disaster Relief is a non-profit that provides assistance with bills, replacing lost items, fuel/heating for the upcoming winter and any other crisis or hardships in the community due to the disaster.

Hope 4 the Mountains Disaster Relief focuses on rebuilding and repair projects. Online donations can be made for both charities here:

Donations for either fund can also be mailed to
